The society has had its Spring meeting on 21st May 2011 in Newport city in Wales. The membrs and their families have attended the meeting which started by an intorduction from the President of the Societry Dr. Amer Jafar who mentioned that the Society is expanding globally and has established strong links with many Iraqi health professionals outside and inside the motherland, Iraq.

Dr. Moayed Aziz, Consultant Anaesthetist followed by a lecture titled ” The black box of anaesthesia”. Moayed detailed the history of practising anaesthesia and the types of anaesthesia agents. A medical workshop for iraqi junior doctors and final year medical students was held earleir on the day of the meeting. Dr. Hayat Al-Ani, Farah Al-Ani and Fadil Belal were the main speakers and organisers of the medical workshop. They are anaesthetists working in Wales and members of the Society.

Dr. Saad Al-Fattal, a members of the executive committe of the society gave a lecture about the history of hospitals in old Iraq. He touched the subject of the mother of all medical schools, Baghdad medical school which was established by Sinderson Pasha in 1927.

Saad presented almost 100 photos from his own collection and talked through them in some details.

At the end of the meeting, Mr. Suhaib Al-Rajeb the famous Iraqi Al-Joza instrument conductor performed his best Iraqi music peices. The audiance demanded more from Suhaib who was obliged to respond.

The next meeting of the Society is on 1st October 2011 in London.

The Iraqi Medical Society International is holding its annual spring meeting for this year on Saturday 21st May 2011 in Newport postgraduate Centre in Wales/ Newport.

This event is open to all Iraqi Medical and Health Professionals. Dr. Moayed Aziz/Consultant Anaesthetist is giving a lecture titled ‘ The Blackbox of Anaesthesia and intensive care’. There are other cultural and social acitivities in the meeting which will start by 2.30PM. Lunch is starting by 1PM. The ticket is £15 per person. There is a medical workshop for the medical students and the junior doctors. The ticket for the students is £5 PP.

All are welcome.

IMSI Programme final

A delegation from the Iraqi Medical Society International has attended the 6^th World Conference of the Iraqi International Medical Association on line in Sharjah in United Arab Emirate for the period between14th-16th April 2011. The conference was successful and very well organised. There were almost 800 Iraqi doctors and allied health professionals from all over the World but mainly from inside Iraq. The Royal Colleges in UK and Ireland were represented as well. The opening ceremony includes speeches from Dr. Ali Harjan the President of the Association and Professor Gerald Sullivan, President of the European Surgical Association. Dr Ali Jawad was representing the Royal College of Physicians in London. He spoke about the relationship between the RCP London and the Iraqi Doctors.

For three days, the conference discussed tens of important subjects in Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dentistry, Paediatrics, Psychiatry and Pharmacology. For example, Associate Professor AlKassab from USA presented the latest developments about diabetes management: from inpatients to outpatients, Dr. Nada Al-Ward presented her work titled: Cancer Profile among Iraqis in Jordan 2000-2009. In her presentation it was clear that breast cancer was the most common type of cancer in female Iraqi patients in Jordan whilst Lung cancer was the most common one between men. Dr. Zaid Abboudi, Heamatologist in UK was speaking in a shared session with other physicians about Cervical Lymphadenopathy. Dr. Amer Jafar, presented his work about Colorectal Cancer in Mosul/ Iraq. His presentation attracted a lengthy discussion about the role of diet in colon cancer. The chairman of the session was Dr. Mazin Al-Janabi, Physician in UK. He spoke about the role of SPECT/CT in imaging the charcot foot.

Under the auspices of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Mr. Munther AL-Doori and Associate Professor Ali Khaki chaired the surgical session of the conference. In that session Mr. Euan Munro spoke about assessment of the vascular patients and Professor Peter McCollum spoke about the diagnosis and management of critical limb ischaemia.

Professor Wafa Al-Omeri, Professor of Obs.&Gynaecology in UAE spoke about Menopausal health post cancer. While Mr. Amar Jawad from UK presented his work on the subject of management of major obstetric haemorrhage.

The conference was accredited with 16 CME hours and it was a good opportunity to meet colleagues from different medical centres. The last activity of the meeting was a social gathering on the beach of AlSharjah, which stands out among the other emirates as the cultural giant.
